Spring Redbud, Poppies and a Bald Eagle near Yosemite

Sunday was my second attempt this Spring to see the beautiful poppies in the Merced River Canyon, along Highway 140 just west of Yosemite.   This trip was a far more surprising adventure than I expected!  The California poppies were absolutely beautiful along the north side of the canyon near Briceburg visitor center.   The Redbud flowers were also in bloom along the river banks and much easier to get to then the poppies.   However, we spotted a BALD EAGLE sitting watching for fish in the Merced River!  What a treat to see something this spectacular in the wild!

California Poppies in the Merced River Canyon near Mariposa and Yosemite National Park California on Highway 140

The poppies are mostly on the other side of the fast moving and very wide Merced river, on really steep hills or in a place where you can’t safely stop your car as Yosemite buses are cruising by frequently.  A wide shot is an “easier” shot to capture “if” your lighting is right during the day.  The close up shots are harder to capture as there aren’t too many poppies close to the road.  You can see how they are just spreading everywhere in the canyon.  Apparently, a few years back they spread even more East due to another fire in the area.

Redbud Spring Blooms with the 1926 historic bridge in background

The redbud was in full bloom in many places all along highway 140 and easier to get to for photographs.  I really wanted to find one near the historic bridges and with much success one was in the perfect place for a few shots.

Redbud with creek, near 1926 historic bridge on highway 140, Merced river Canyon near Yosemite National Park and Mariposa California

This area had a little creek with a beautiful redbud blooms and a few other trees working nicely for my shot.  From the bridge, I was not happy with the setting so I decided to hike down, go under the bridge and balance on some rocks to get in the middle of the creek to get my shot!  It is amazing when you get down and off the beaten path that others hardly ever see that is so amazing!   Beauty at it’s best!

What is so great about this shot you say? Look closely!!!

What is so great about this shot you say?  Look closely!!!    It is a BALD EAGLE!!   He is sitting there looking for fish in the Merced river along highway 140.    I spotted the Bald Eagle as we were driving and going about 40MPH.  I guess my eyes are still good! LOL.  Here try it again…

Clearly this was an amazing day to see something so rare like a bald eagle in the wild.

Really wishing a had a more telephoto lens like maybe Canon 400!   However, I tried to use what I had in my bag.  The above shots are with my old lens the 18-135 and 18-200 lens.

Bald Eagle sitting in the tree watching for fish in the Merced River!

Amazing right?  I know my photo is not perfectly sharp, but it is the best I could do considering how far away the bird was sitting.  We watched him for about 10 minutes until he took off and flew downstream and out of sight.

Bald Eagle started to fly downstream looking for his fish...

Amazing right?

Here are a few more photographs from the day – enjoy!

Until next time… wishing you great adventures and to capturing many moments along your journey of life.

Sweet Dreams Wedding Cakes and Floral Design – Premier Bride Showplace 2012

Premier Bride Showplace Bridal Show | Fresno | 1.8.2012

I love bridal shows, but seriously, who doesn’t right?  All the happy brides walking the show with their Mom’s or best friends, looking for information to plan their biggest day EVER…  the day the have been dreaming of is one step closer!  They are waiting all day to win prizes, travel and honeymoon trips, sipping free champagne… life is good!

Over my years as a wedding photographer I have been to many bridal shows as some of them I taken the “official” photographs for the event and obviously to many weddings.  My favorite part about these important days is when I get to eat cake!   This day was no different.

At the local wedding cake and floral studio in town, they were a sponsor for the event and had tickets available.  I stopped by to get two tickets and of course we started to chat about her absolutely smelling amazing cake and lovely floral arrangements she had prepared for the event the next day.  Really?  I have to wait until tomorrow to have a cake tasting?  IT was so worth the wait as it was the best cake I had ever tasted!!

Sweet Dreams – Custom Cakes and Floral Designs in mountain village of Oakhurst, California is the best place for your wedding custom cakes needs and of course they also do floral designs, so even better when you need both items for your wedding or event.

Here are a few featured photographs for Sweet Dreams – Custom Wedding Cakes and Floral Designs.  Enjoy!

Oakhurst Sierra Rotary Club – Student Shadow Program 2011 | Elderberry House

| Joelle Leder Photography participated in the 2011 Student Shadow Program with Oakhurst Sierra Rotary Club.  | 5.25.11 | Oakhurst CA |

“““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““`

Thank you to Rotary President Fern and Project Organizer Brian for     having Joelle Leder Photography participate this year!

The local students participating in this program were able to choose a mentor to “shadow” for the day from many different occupations that the Rotary Club volunteers offered.  Obviously, the students I had were interested in Photography!  What a fantastic program, wish I had the chance to do this when I was younger.

I had two amazing students including a Jr High and a High School student that shadowed me  in a “typical day” situation.  So, of course, we started at Starbucks and discussed a little about my background, the projects I have worked on, reviewed some photographs from my wedding, portrait & fine art landscape portfolio, discussed the photography world, how important education plays a role in being a photographer and more.  Then we reviewed the camera, lenses, some fundamentals and then we headed over to Erna’s Elderberry House & Chateau to scout the location for a potential bride.  The students used my cameras and we did a little photo shoot of this beautiful location.

Besides scouting out the Elderberry House location, I also brought along a some scrabble letters for us to do a little photo project to learn the camera and lenses even more.

Then, we printed some of the photographs to show and discuss at the presentation for the Rotary at the luncheon.  The students did an awesome job!! They stated that they had fun, learned so much and will be continuing the love for photography!

What a fabulous, fun day!  Glad I got to be a part of it.

Thank you to The Estate by the Elderberries for letting us swing by.  This 5 Star Restaurant/Resort is absolutely beautiful and has an award winning restaurant called the Elderberry House, fabulous place to stay at the Chateau du Sureau Inn.  Oh yes, and relax your day away at the SPA Sureau.   FYI – Many famous celebrities have been married and have stayed here too also!

AND – of course they have an amazing venue, several ceremony and reception locations for a dream wedding!!

From their website -
“CHATEAU du SUREAU is a fairytale Inn that has received some of the highest ratings granted a hotel. Since its opening in 1991, this magical destination has earned both the Forbes Five-Star and American Automobile Association’s Five-Diamond awards as well as membership in the prestigious Relais & Chateaux organization. Located just sixteen miles from the south entrance of Yosemite National Park, Chateau du Sureau is a romantic haven wherein the classic traditions of old Europe live today.”
